FEBRUARY 1852 COURT 16th day, Goldsboro
2/52 326 mention of John G. Barnes as grand juror & C. M. Holland
2/52 327 A Deed of Sale from Stephen Tedder to Thos Wood duly proved in open court by the oath of Josiah Barnes a subscribing witness and ordered that it be registered.
2/52 328 Ordered that Clarkey Artis be bound to Stephen Barnes until she arrives at lawful age by his entering into bond to John G. Barnes and David Barden security – bond given.
2/52 329 Ordered that Jesse Bass be appointed overseer of the road leading from the branch near Charity Barnes to Black Creek bridge near Ichabod Pearson’s mill and the usual hand work thereon.
2/52 330 Ordered that Burket Barnes, James Hooks and Jesse Sauls be appointed a committee to apportion the hands on the following roads vize: the road crossing the Black creek at the seven bridges, the road crossing Davis’ Mill and the road leading to Black Creek meeting house and the overseer for each road be notified to attend the meeting of the committee.
2/52 330 Mac C. Holland empanelled as petite juror.
2/52 330 Ordered that William Barnes and Jonathan Gifford be allowed the sum of sixty eight 20/100 dollars for work on Contentnea bridge and that the same be paid out of the county tax.
2/52 332 W. Barnes a/c sales returned to court and ordered to be recorded.
2/52 332 John A. Breen clerk of this court allowed three hundred twenty nine 20/100 dollars.
2/52 333 John Barnes guardian to the heirs of W. Barnes says he has nothing in hand as yet.
2/52 336 Ordered by the court a majority of Justices being present that Robert Cox, Amos Horn and William N. Barnes be appointed commissioners to contract with some suitable person for the construction of a substantial bridge over the Great Swamp and that point where the public road leading from the Village of Nahunta on the W&RR Road to the old road near the residence of Joseph Ferrell, crossing said Great Swamp near the residence of William N. Barnes and that the county Trustee pay for the creation of said bridge out of any monies in his hands upon the production by the contractor of the certificate of the commissioners aforesaid showing that said bridge has been completed in conforming to the contract entered into with said commission.
2/52 336 Ordered that Matthew Hooks be appointed overseer of the road leading from Major Copeland to the Great Branch at Charity Barnes’ and the usual hand work thereon.
2/52 336 Ordered that Benj Aycock, James Hooks and Green Holland be appointed a committee to audit and settle the accounts of Joshua Jones dec and James Foulk’s executor of Tobias Jones and report to the next term.
2/52 339 State of North Carolina vs. Elisha Holland and Daniel Aycock - The defendants each acknowledge themselves endebted to the State of North Carolina in the sum of two hundred dollars to be levied upon the goods and chattel land and tenements to be void upon condition that Elisha Holland make his personal appearance at the next term of this court and not depart the same without leave.
2/52 339 Ordered that Col. William Hooks, Simon Hooks and Benjamin Aycock be appointed a committee to examine into the practicality of building a bridge across the Great Swamp on the new road at William N. Barnes.

2/52 352 State of North Carolina vs. Morriss/Mosess? N. Barnes – Defendant submits & fined fifty cents and other costs. Bill cost a/c monies paid in office.
2/52 353 mention of John W. Holland [could this be the first child of Elisha and Elizabeth Holland, b. c. 1923, d. unk., age around 29, wife unk.?], James R. Holland [could this be Woodard and Celia's child, between Milley and Bing, b. 1819, d. 1862, age 32 or 32 at this time?] and Jane Holland [these three people could be a totally different Holland family] in a suit.
2/52 355 A Deed of Sale from Jacob Hooks to W.L.P. Heath duly proved in open court by the oath of S. W. Barnes a subscribing witness and ordered that it be registered.
2/52 359 A Deed of Sale from Simon Aycock to Calvin Aycock duly proved in open court by the oath of John Barnes a subscribing witness and ordered that it be registered.
2/52 361 Green H. Holland elected constable in Nahunta district for one year……..entered into bond with Joshua Jones, James Hinnant, N. G. Holland and William Pope securities.

5/52 364 Josiah Barnes called for jury duty
5/52 365 Mrs. M. A. Borden has lien to retail spiritous liquors at her Hotel in the Town of Goldsboro for one year.
5/52 366 Ordered that Warren Aycock be appointed Guardian to Simon, Nancy Charity Zilpha & James Barnes and that he enter into bond in the sum of five hundred dollars with Daniel Aycock and Jesse Aycock sec. Bond given.
5/52 370 State of North Carolina use Exum Holland vs. L.P. Sanford et al …..find in favor of the plaintiff … $40 and costs and interest.
5/52 374 State of North Carolina vs. S. W. 2/54 1 Drew Barnes served as a grand juror.
2/54 5 State of North Carolina use of Eveline Giffords vs. Elisha Holland – Bastardy
It appearing to the satisfaction of the court that the child of Eveline Giffords wherewith she has charged the defendant is now born and by the admission of the defendant that he is the father thereof. The court doth order and adjudge that he enter into bond with surety as required by law. It is further ordered and adjudged that defendant Elisha Holland pay into the court forthwith for the use of Eveline Gifford the sum of ten dollars for her lying in month and twelve dollars annually for each year hereto for seven successive years for the support of the said bastard child and that he pay the costs of these proceedings.
2/54 7 Ordered that Drew Barnes be appointed Guardian to Jesse Jones and enter into bond of eight hundred dollars with Daniel Aycock, West Holland and Green H. Holland, securities. Bond given.
2/54 7 Exum Holland Guardian to Elizabeth Copeland, Joannah Copeland and Jonathan Copeland come into court and renew his bond in the sum of five hundred dollars with West Holland and Green H. Holland, Sec.
2/54 7 John G. Barnes Guardian to Enos Barnes comes into court and renews his bond in the sum of three thousand dollars with Davis Bardin and Stephen W. Barnes, Sec.
2/54 10 Joshua Barnes heirs Guardian a/c returned to court and order to be recorded.
2/54 11 Enos Barnes Guardian account returned to court and ordered to be recorded.
2/54 11 Ordered that Ruffin Barnes be allowed the sum of one 8/100 dollars in the case of the State of North Carolina vs. Nicholas S. Cobb and that the same be paid him out of the county tax.
2/54 13 Same [Wilmington & W Rail Roads Company was previous case] vs. Elias Barnes - Same jury as above sworn and charged and find all issues in favor of plaintiffs and assess damages at $75.00 which is principle money and carried interest till paid. Judgment of the court for the same and all costs.
2/54 16 Ordered that Josiah Barnes be appointed overseer of the road leading from Major Copeland to the Great branch at Charity Barnes and the usual hands work thereon.
2/54 18 Ordered that Privet Scott, Lewis Pike, James B. Hooks, Simon Hooks, Drew Barnes, Edwin Barnes and Green H. Holland be appointed a patrol in Nahunta District to serve one year at pleasure without pay.
2/54 22 A deed of sale from James Holland and Mary Holland his wife to Simon Newsom duly proved in open court and ordered that it be registered.
2/54 23 Johnathan [sic] Barnes and Elias Barnes summoned for jury duty for March court.

5/54 30 mention of James Holland
5/54 34 Ordered that Josiah Barnes be allowed the sum of $22 for repairs on black creek bridge and that the same be paid him out of the county tax.
5/54 35 On motion it is ordered that Elias Barnes be appointed administrator on the estate of Zadoc S. Thompson and enter into bonds of ninety thousand dollars with William Barnes and Macon Moyo? Sec. Ordered that he have lease to sale the perishable estate. Bond given, adm. qualified.
5/54 35 Graddy Garris guardian to John W. and Sarah H? Garris come into court and renew his bond in the sum of $500 with John G. Barnes and Wm. Pope? securities.
5/54 36 Ordered that the following Justices and freeholders be appointed to hold the Election at the different precincts on the 1st Thursday August next: …[listing of districts]…Nahunta District: James Hooks Jr., Drewry Barnes, Jesse Sauls
5/54 42 Graddy Garris guardian to Joseph & Martha Colyen came into court and renewed his bond in the sum of $500 with John G. Barnes and Wm. Pope as securities.
AUGUST 1854 WAYNE COUNTY COURT
8/54 55 State of North Carolina vs. Owen Daniel and Bunyan Barnes – The defendants acknowledge themselves indebted to the State of North Carolina in the sum of five hundred dollars each to be levied of their goods and chattel lands and tenements to be void nevertheless upon condition that Owen Daniel make his personal appearance at the next Superior Court of law to be held at the court house in Goldsboro on the 1st Monday after the 4th Monday in September next and shall not depart the same without leave.
8/54 60 Ordered that Grooms H. Barnes be appointed overseer of the road leading from Rountree bridge to the usual working place on Black Creek causeway and the usual hands work there.
8/54 61 Ordered that notice issued to Burket Barnes and Peter S. Barnes to appear at the next term of this court and show evidence if any they can why Daniel Aycock shall not have hands for the road they are overseers of to the one when the said Aycock is overseer of.
8/54 62 Ordered that Bunyan Barnes, Amos Horn and Barna Rose be appointed a committee to contract or let out the repairs of the bridge across the Cabbin branch and report to the next court.
8/54 62 Elias Barnes is appointed guardian of John T. Thompson and Mahalia S. Thompson infant children of Zadock S. Thompson dec and enters into bond of sixty thousand dollars with Macon Moze and William T. Dortch sureties – Bond given.
8/54 63 ……Richard A. Baker guardian of Laura M. Baker has left the State…..ordered that Richard A. Baker be removed as guardian and that John G. Barnes be appointed guardian of said Laura M. Baker……
8/54 65 A paper writing purporting to be the Last Will and Testament of Mary Burdin is offered to probate on the testimony of Robert M Cox and Elisha Barnes the subscribing witness thereto and is duly proven. Whereupon Benj. H. Burden the executor therein named is duly qualified.
8/54 70 Stephen W. Barnes summoned for November 1854 court.
NOVEMBER 1854 WAYNE COUNTY COURT
11/54 74 Stephen W. Barnes reported for jury duty
11/54 76 Ordered that John G. Barnes be allowed the sum of $15.75 for repairs on the Great Swamp bridge near Drew Barnes and that the same be paid of the county tax.
11/54 77 State of North Carolina vs. Bryan Peacock – Peter S. Barnes a witness for the State in this case was solemnly called and failed to appear. Fined $80 vis;
11/54 80 Ordered that Burket Barnes, James Hooks and Larry Newsom be appointed a committee to apportion the hands that work on the roads leading from the Widow Martin to the Davis Mills and the road leading to the fork at the Bizzell place so that the said hands shall be cayneal?? according to length of said roads and report to the next term of this court.
11/54 81 Ordered that Stephen W. Barnes and his three hands be exempt from working on the road leading from the main Smithfield road by Nahunta Depot to said Smithfield road for five years in consideration of his having put said road in order.
11/54 87 David/Daniel Hunt to the Court - It appearing to the satisfaction of the court, upon the oath of said David Hunt and Elias Barnes Eign., that the said David Hunt ….served in War of 1812…for 4 months six days….unable to support family…has rheumatism…has not work in 6 years…he is now age 63…Court recommends to General Assembly an allowance of $80. [note: cites many heartbreaking details]
11/54 87 Jemina Evans to the Court - It appears to the satisfaction of the court from testimony of …….. and of Elias Barnes Eign….widow of John Evans deceased…during the last War with Great Britain…having served 4 months five days….recommend allowance of $40.
