This page is a sub-section of Richard Holland and his wife Bethany Barnes.  It shows the family and descendants of their second child, Murray Manning Holland.  Richard Holland is son of Absalom Holland. 

Absalom's children:

2.  Murray Manning Holland was born 22 December 1873 in Wayne County, North Carolina. Both is parents died in 1882 when he was 9 years old.  After their death, Murray lived for a short time with his uncle William Holland, then with Elijah Edgerton.  He married 1st Betty Ellen Edgerton, daughter of Exum Pike ('Adk') Edgerton and Elizabeth Holland.  She was his 2nd cousin.  See the Notes section of this web site for more information on this relationship.  Betty was born 5 November 1876, in Wayne County, North Carolina, and died 9 April 1901, in Wayne County, North Carolina, at the age of 24, leaving behind a 10-month old baby.  She was buried in Simon Holland Cemetery in Wayne County.  

That same year, on 24 December 1901, Murray married 2nd Mattie Sasser.   Mattie was born 19 January 1883, the daughter of Eli Sasser and Mary Howell.  They had 7 children together.  

Murray Manning Holland died 19 February 1934 and was buried in Simon Holland Cemetery. Mattie died 4 July 1959, 25 years after Murray, and was buried in the Simon Holland Cemetery.

Children of Murray Manning Holland and Betty Edgerton: 

1.  Infant, born and died 4 April 1900; buried in Simon Holland Cemetery in Pinkney, Wayne County, North Carolina.  I realize the unlikliness of the birth dates of these two children of Betty Edgerton and Murray Manning Holland.  This infant is listed in the Wayne Counties Cemeteries Book, Vol. 1.  The gravestone inscription reads, "Infant of M. M. and Bettie Holland."  New information is welcome. 

1.  Betty Ora Holland was born 15 June 1900 in Wayne County, North Carolina. She married William Lester Shirley in October 1920.  He was born 18 September 1896 in Wayne County, North Carolina, the son of William Shirley of Suffolk, Virginia.
Children of Betty Holland and William Shirley:

1.  Lois Virginia Shirley was born 22 February 1924 in Wayne County, North Carolina.  She married James R. Hinnant on 14 March 1942, in South Carolina.  He was born 17 November 1922, died 11 September 1960, and was buried in Kenly Cemetery.  
Child of Lois Virginia Shirley and James Hinnant:

1.  James R. Hinnant, Jr., was born 15 November 1942 in Johnston County, North Carolina. 

2. Wilberdean Murray Shirley was born 14 June 1930 in Wayne County, North Carolina.  He was married 23 July 1949, in Goldsboro, North Carolina, to Margie Barnes.

1.  Trista Orda Shirley was born 2 December 1952, in Goldsboro, North Carolina.

2.  Rayne Deen Shirley was born 28 July 1959, in Goldsboro, North Carolina.

2. Murray Rondal Holland was born 13 December 1902.  He married Beulah Aycock, born 1906. He died February 1947 and was buried in the Aycock Cemetery, Wayne County, North Carolina.

1. Murray Rondal Holland, Jr. (called Ronnie) was born 2 December 1923.  On 5 June 1947. in Goldsboro, North Carolina ¹¹ he married Helen Gray Hare.  She was born 13 September 1928 in Goldsboro, Wayne County, North Carolina, daughter of Simon T. Hare (born Stoney Creek, Wayne County 11 December 1904) and Luna Wise who was born about 1912.  (Note:  Helen Hare's birth certificate names her mother as 'Reva' Wise, age 16, but she was always known as Luna Wise.)  Simon T. Hare's parents are George William Hare and Mariah Sophie Futrell.  Helen Gray Hare Holland died 2 March 1983 in Goldsboro, Wayne County, North Carolina.¹²  Murray Rondall Holland, Jr. died 15 March 2004.¹⁰⁷

9.  Larry Earl Holland was born 11 May 1940.  He married Patricia Carolyn Wells in Wichita Falls, Texas, on 30 June 1961.  She was born 21 November 1942.¹⁰⁸

1.  Sara Therese ("Teri") Holland was born 20 May 1962 in Anchorage, Alaska.  She married Michael Thomas Bryant in Pilot, North Carolina, on 11 July 1987.

1.  Christopher Michael Bryant was born 12 September 1988.

2.  Abbott Elizabeth Bryant was born 25 March 1992.  

2.  Infant girl was born 4 April 1963 and died 11 April 1963 in Anchorage, Alaska.

3.  Larry Earl Holland, Jr. was born 13 March 1964 in Trenton, New Jersey.  He married Melodie Crumpler in Selma, North Carolina, on 14 February 1991.  They divorced in March 2001.

1.  Katelynne Nicole Holland was born 8 November 1993.

2.  William Hunter Holland was born 7 November 1995.  

4.  Sondra Melissa Holland was born 11 December 1970 in Smithfield, Johnston County, North Carolina.  She married Michael Craig Ayscue in Pilot, North Carolina, on 16 May 1993.¹²⁰ 
Children of Sondra Holland and Michael Ayscue:

1.  Matthew Craig Ayscue was born 14 November 1995.

2.  Melissa Caroline Ayscue was born 3 December 1997.

3.  Madelynn Claire Ayscue was born 8 July 1999.  

5.  Martha Ann ("Marcie") Holland was born 31 December 1971 in Smithfield, Johnston County, North Carolina.   

10.  Jerry Holland was born in 1944.

11.  Elaine Holland was born in 1946. 

3. Russell Manning Holland was born 26 July 1904, in Wayne County, North Carolina.  On 4 January 1923, he married  Minnie Lee Barnes in Wayne County.  She was born 15 May 1907, in Wayne County, the daughter of Bennett and Genevive Barnes.  Russell Holland died 3 January 1983, and was buried in Raleigh, North Carolina.  Minnie Lee Barnes Holland died 27 April 1990 and was buried in the Barnes-Exum cemetery in Raleigh, North Carolina.

1.  Edsel Manning Holland was born 18 September 1924 in rural Wayne County, North Carolina near Fremont.  He married on 21 June 1947 in Goldsboro, North Carolina to Eunice Coley who was born 14 April 1929 in rural Wayne County, North Carolina near Mr. Olive.  Eunice was the daughter of Gordon Edward Coley (born around 1898, died 7 April 1932) and Nellie Jane Jones (born around 1900).  Nellie Jane Jones married 2nd Elworth Pope ¹⁸.  See a picture of Ed and Eunice Holland in the album section.

1. Gordon Russell Holland was born 13 November 1951 in Raleigh, North Carolina.  Married 26 February 1981 Dawn Gardner who was born 19 October 1951.
Children of Gordon Russell Holland and Dawn Gardner:  

1.  Michael Gordon Holland was born 14 September 1982 in Greenville, South Carolina.  He graduated from College of Charleston in 2010.

2.  Virginia Elizabeth Holland (called Jenny) was born 27 March 1984 in Greenville, South Carolina. 

2.  Donald Manning Holland was born 22 May 1953 in Raleigh, North Carolina.  He married Wanda Yeargin on 4 March 1978.  They divorced.
Donald married 2nd Anne Mundy.

3.  Janice Lee Holland was born 12 May 1958 in Greensboro, North Carolina.  On 27 September 1980, she married Thomas L. Mills, Jr.  They divorced.  Janice Holland married 2nd Mark Anthony Souza on 10 May 1991.  He was born 14 September 1957.
Children of Janice Holland and Thomas Mills, Jr.: 

1.  Brandi Christine-Marie Mills was born 28 September 1981 in Greenville, South Carolina.  As an alumni of the University of South Carolina, she holds a Bachelor's degree in Media Arts.  Brandi resides in Simpsonville, South Carolina.  There is a picture of her in the Family Album section.¹⁸⁸

2.  LeeAnn Holland Mills was born 25 December 1985 in Greenville, South Carolina.  She married James Matthew Faulkner on 13 February 2011.  James Faulkner was born 31 October 1978.

4.  Bruce Edsel Holland was born 21 October 1962 in Winston Salem, North Carolina.  He married Tammy Dukes on 27 February 1983.  They divorced.   Bruce Holland married 2nd Melinda Cokeron 14 May 19??.  She was born 17 February 19??.

1.  Jill Ashley Holland, born 14 August 1983 in Greenville, SC.

4.  Mary Thelma Holland was born 8 July 1906.  She married William Clarence Barnes  on 4 November 1920 in Wayne County, North Carolina.  He was born 14 November 1902 in Wayne County, North Carolina, the son of Bennett and Genevieve Barnes.
Children of Mary Thelma Holland and William Barnes: 

1.  William Murray Barnes was born 19 October 1923 in Wayne County, North Carolina.  He married Pauline Sasser on 20 September 1952.  She was born 23 September 1933.  W. M. Barnes died before 2006.

1.  Carla Hayes Barnes was born 19 November 1952.

2.  William Wayne Barnes was born 13 November 1954.

3.  Kenneth Edwin Barnes was born 3 June 1963. 

2.  Doyle Rackley Barnes was born 10 January 1925.  He died 10 October 1944, and was buried in the  Bennett-Barnes Cemetery.  

3.  Doyce Gaines Barnes was born 25 July 1926 in Wayne County, North Carolina. He married Reba Wester on 11 September 1948.  She was born 17 February 1928 in Wayne County, North Carolina. Doyce Gaines Barnes died 17 November 1995.  Reba was living in Goldsboro, North Carolina, in 2006.

1.  Doyce Gaines Barnes, Jr., was born 25 March 1949, in Wayne County, North Carolina.

2.  William Hubert Barnes was born 14 March 1952, in Wayne County, North Carolina.

3.  Deborah Gail Barnes was born 6 October 1953, in Wayne County, North Carolina.

4.  Kim Tracy Barnes was born 18 December 1961, in Wayne County, North Carolina.

4.  Rudy Croons Barnes was born 4 June 1930 in Wayne County, North Carolina. He graduated from Nahunta High School in Pikeville, Wayne County, North Carolina, where he was a star basketball player, pitched baseball, and was named best all-around in his class.  He fought on the front lines in the Korean War for the United States Army.  He married Zella Frances Fields, called Frances, on 3 May 1953.  She was born 8 May 1933 in Johnston County, North Carolina, daughter of Howard Joel Fields and Alice Brock.  Rudy was an active member of Pleasant Grove Church in Pikeville, was an avid golfer and loved to fish.  After 53 years of marriage, Rudy died, on 1 December 2006, in Pikeville, North Carolina.  He was buried at Pikeville Cemetery on 5 December 2006.  His obituary is in the Public Records section of this web site.

1.  Beverly Fran Barnes was born 2 July 1965.  She married Chet Melvin.  They were living in Raleigh in 2006. 

5.  Jimmie Myers Barnes was born 14 October 1933, in Wayne County, North Carolina.  He married Nettie Carol Tyndall on 5 September 1955, in Lenoir County, North Carolina.   She was born 14 February 1937, in Lenoir County, North Carolina.  They were living in Jacksonville, Onslow County, North Carolina, in 2006,
Child of Jimmie Myers Barnes and Nettie Carol Tyndall:

1.  Becky Carol Barnes was born 5 July 1957, in Lenoir County, North Carolina.  

6.  Travis Rand Barnes was born 26 June 1937, in Wayne County, North Carolina.  He married Glenie Langley on 20 January 1960 in Wayne County, North Carolina.  She was born 3 May 1941, in Wayne County, North Carolina.  Travis Rand Barnes died before 2006.  Glennie was living in Kenly, in Johnston County, North Carolina in 2006,

5.  Beulah Bethany Holland was born 5 June 1908, in Wayne County, North Carolina.   She married Wade Hampton Aycock on 12 November 1925. He was born 28 January 1902, in Wayne County, North Carolina.

6.  Beatrice Lorena Holland was born 2 November 1910, in Wayne County, North Carolina. She married John Henry Hooks on 5 January 1935. John Henry Hooks was born 10 November 1907, son of John C. Hooks and Cornelia Daubiney.
Children of Beatrice Holland and John Henry Hooks:

1.  Shirley Ann Hooks was born 22 April 1936, in Wayne County, North Carolina.   She married James Arthur Scott on 26 October 1957.  James Arthur Scott was born 15 May 1937, in Wilson, North Carolina, son of James Arthur Scott and Thelma Ferrell.

2.  Johnnie Jean Hooks was born 16 December 1938, in Wayne County, North Carolina.   She married Harvey Alton Pittman on 25 May 1957. He was born 19 April 1937, in Johnston County, North Carolina, son of Fletcher Pittman (born ca. 1902, died August 1952 Johnston County, North Carolina; buried in Holly Springs Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery)³⁸   and Gertrude Stancil.
Children of Johnnie Jean Hooks and Harvey Alton Pittman:

1.  Handy Jean Pittman was born 17 November 1960 in Wilson County, North Carolina. 

7.  Sara Lee Holland was born 9 June 1913.   She married David R. Cannon on 23 December 1929. David R. Cannon was born 11 August 1909.  He died 16 February 1959, and was buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery, in  Norfolk, Virginia.  
Children of Sara Lee Holland and David R. Cannon:

1.  David Manning Cannon was born 11 August 1930.  He died 11 August 1930 and was buried in Simon Holland Cemetery.

2.  Mattie Carolyn Cannon was born 12 July 1939.

8.  Infant girl Holland born prematurely at about 6.5 months and died 5 July 1915, at Great Swamp, Wayne County, North Carolina.  She was buried in a Holland cemetery.

9.  Ishmael Benton Holland was born 11 October 1917, died 13 October 1962.  He  married Marie Briscoe, born 29 August 1924, daughter of Frances and Evan L. Briscoe.

1.  Ishmael Benton Holland, Jr. was born 31 January 1947.

2.  Vicki Lynn Holland was born 10 July 1949.  She married Raymond Lee Dean, Jr.
