This page is a sub-section of Burdin Holland, C. S. A.  It contains the first marriage and children of his son James Henry Burton Holland.  James Henry Burton Holland was the first son Burdin Holland has with his 3rd wife, Mary Susan Bass.  The other children of Burdin Holland are covered in another section.  

5. James Henry Burton Holland (called Burton) was born 19 January 1893 in Wayne County, North Carolina. He died 18 April 1952 in Wayne County, North Carolina.  His obituary may be found in the Public Records section of this web site. 

He married first Lillie Bell Bass on 30 August 1914 in Seven Springs, Wayne County, North Carolina.  She was 13.  Lillie Bell Bass was born 23 February 1901 in Wayne County, North Carolina, the daughter of Andrew Jackson Bass (1872-1947) and Mary Catherine Jones (1874-1935). They had six children together; one died an infant.  Lillie was told not to have any more babies, and she was with child when she died.  Her death certificate states that the cause of her death was epilepsy, but most of her grandchildren who were interviewed by Vickie Holland did not even know she had epilepsy.  Lillie died 28 May 1929 in Wayne County, North Carolina and was buried the next day in the family cemetery on Liddell Shortcut Road in Lenoir County, North Carolina.  She was only 28 years old.  

James Henry Burton Holland married second Estella Hinson 5 December 1930.  They had eight children together.  They are covered in a separate section.  It is interesting to note that two of Burton and Lillie Bell's children, Charlie and Carrie, married into their father's 2nd wife's family.  There is a chart at the end of this section that shows the intersections between the Holland and Hinson families.

Children of James Henry Burton Holland and Lillie Bell Bass:

1.  Charlie James Holland was born 1 September 1916 in Lenoir County, North Carolina. He was 12 years old when his mother Lillie died, and 14 years old when his father married Estelle Hinson.

Charlie married Esther Isabelle Hinson on 20 November 1937 in her parents' home in Wayne County, North Carolina. Esther was born 16 January 1921 in Wayne County. She was the daughter of Chesley Floyd Hinson (born 13 Feb 1900, son of Walter Andrew Hinson and Melvina Johnson, died 31 March 1950) and Bertha Mae Faircloth (married 30 October 1919 in Wayne County).  Esther was first cousin once removed to Charlie's father's second wife.  She was also first cousin once removed to Charlie's sister Carrie Holland's husband, Charlie Vance Hinson II. 

Esther was a homemaker and Charlie was a farmer. She died 9 September 1993 in Wayne County, NC and was buried 11 September 1993 at Jordan Chapel Church in Wayne County, North Carolina.  Charlie died 6 February 1969 in Wayne County and was buried 8 February 1969, at Jordan Chapel Church in Wayne County.

1. Peggy Jean Holland was born 10 September 1938 in Wayne County, North Carolina.  She married Warren Lennie Whaley.  He was born 17 October 1921 in Duplin County, North Carolina, and died 3 October 2002.

1.  Joyce Ann "Joy" Whaley was born 10 June1963 in Wayne County, North Carolina.  She married Terry Aycock.  There is a picture of their family in the Album section of this website.

1.  Cynthia Renee Aycock (adopted from Terry's first marriage) was born 15 September 1982.  She married Willie Ray Person, Jr., 14 December 2002 in Wayne County, North Carolina.

James Allen Holland was born 22 September 1940, in Wayne County, North Carolina.   He married first, Kim Lee March in 1963.  James Allen Holland married 2nd, Joyce Heath Marshburn on 23 September 1989, in Lenoir County, NC.  They divorced.  James married 3rd, Leda Ann Hawkins Colie 3 January 1999,  in Alabama.  They divorced in August 2006. He died 12 October 2008, in Goldsboro, North Carolina.  His obituary is in the Public Records, Deaths section of this web site.

3. Lillie Mae Holland was called "Tinnie" and was born 20 October 1941 in Wayne County, North Carolina.  She married Bobby Deaver on 21 August 1961.  He died 4 January 2004 and was buried at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Kinston, Lenoir County, North Carolina.

5. Bertha LaRose Holland was born 3 April 1945 in Wayne County, North Carolina.  She married 1st Preston Blackwell.

Alice Faye Holland was born 15 June 1946 in Wayne County, North Carolina.  She married William Harvey (called John) Hargrove, Jr. 10 May 1963.  He was born 17 November 1943, the son of William Harvey Hargrove and Eva Mae Lane of Wayne County, North Carolina.  In addition to William Harvey, Jr., the Lanes also had a daughter Eva Ann Hargrove who married a Nix.  Pictures of Alice Faye Holland's family are in the Album section of this web site.

1.  Regina Laurette Hargrove was born 2 July 1965 in Goldsboro, North Carolina.  She married Leonard Mark Newsome (called Mark) 16 July 1983.  Mark was born 8 September 1959, the son of Leonard McCoy Newsome (b. in Goldsboro, NC; d. before 2000) and Lula Marie Gurley (b. in Goldsboro, Wayne County, North Carolina).  Lula Marie Gurley married 2nd a Mr. Sasser. ⁴⁴

Charlie Vance Hinson II was also first cousin once removed of Esther Isabelle Hinson, wife of Carrie's brother Charlie James Holland.   He died 15 January 1981, at age 69.  There is a chart at the end of this section that shows the intersections between the Holland and Hinson families.

About this History

I wish to acknowledge the very important contributions of Mrs. Vickie Sams Holland of LaGrange, North Carolina, who researched and contributed most of the information on Burdin Holland, from whom her husband Dennis descends.  In appreciation for her work, and in her honor, I dedicate this section to their daughter who did not have the chance to know her Holland family:
