2.  Frances Matilda Holland, second child and oldest daughter of Alvin Holland and Mary Ellen Miers, was born 18 February 1853, in Alabama.  She married Henry Nathan Maddux on 1 April 1874, in Calhoun County, Alabama, at the age of 21.  Henry Maddux was born 18 October 1852, in Pike County, Georgia, the son of Benjamin Pryor Maddox (born 1812 in Griffin, Spalding County, Georgia and died 1890 in Cleburne County, Alabama) and Judy Ann Hardin (born 1822 in Georgia and died 1898 in Cleburne County, Alabama). 

It is not a typo that Henry Nathan Maddux's last name is spelled differently from his father's.  According to B. L. and Wilson Maddux, some of their kin that came to Texas and "went on" spelled their name 'Maddox' instead of 'Maddux'.  Records show that Henry Nathan was the only son to spell his name 'ux.'  It is possible that the different spelling derived from a hand-written court or census record that looked like or was recorded as 'ux' rather that 'ox.'  The Maddux family is not my ancestral line so I have not done a lot of research on it.  I do know that the Maddux name has been in Virginia since the 1600's and that the spelling of the name in written records has many forms.  Some comments on the spelling of Maddux are online at http://maverik.rootsweb.com/mcuz/variatio.htm.  It is simply not known why Frances' husband Henry's name is spelled differently from his siblings and father.

Frances Holland's name is sometimes spelled in the masculine form of 'Francis.'  Their marriage certificate in Calhoun County, Alabama, has Henry Mattox and Frances Hollan.  The 1880 census in Calhoun County, Alabama, has Henry Maddux and Francis, as does the 1900 census in Bell County, Texas.  Language was spoken long before it was written, and even as recently as a hundred years ago, spelling was not a precise art to many who recorded names in court records, church records, and especially family Bibles. 

The area in eastern Alabama in which this family was living, was east of Birmingham, in the Talladega and Anniston area. They have records in Talladega, Calhoun, and Cleburne County. Cleburne County borders western Georgia.  I have included a map of Alabama counties to assist in following this family line.

In late 1895, the Frances Holland Maddux family left Alabama, bound for Texas, an approximately 800-mile journey.  The men and older boys left Talladega, Alabama, in an oxen-drawn covered wagon; the women and young children traveled by train and arrived in Holland, Texas, 1 January 1895.

Henry and Frances Maddux had 9 children;  they were all born in Alabama except the last one, Noah, who was born in Texas in 1896.  Henry Maddux died 30 May 1901, in Bell County, Texas, at the age of 48.  Frances died 4 February 1930, in Holland, Bell County, Texas, and was buried in Dallas Cemetery in Bell County.  She was 76.

1. Nathan Benjamin Franklin Maddux was born 26 September 1875 in Alabama.  He died 31 March 1959 in Holland, Bell County, Texas, at age 83.

2.  Belle Zoro Maddux was born 16 February 1877 in Jackson County, Alabama.  Her line is followed in a separate section.

3.  Bright Lonzo Maddux was born 30 April 1880, in Iron City, Calhoun County, Alabama.  He married Gertrude Bell Richard on 5 January 1913, in Bell County, Texas; he was 32, she was 17.  Gertrude Richard, called Gertie,  was born 3 October 1895 in Lampasas, Texas.  She was the sister to Amanda Jane Richard, who married Bright Maddux's brother Cluster Right Maddux.  Gertie Richard Maddux died 12 April 1924, in Bell County, Texas, at age 28.  She was buried at Dallas Cemetery in Bell County, Texas.  Bright Maddux died 11 December 1963, at age 83, and was buried at Holland Cemetery, Bell County, Texas.
Children of Bright Maddux and Gertrude Richard:

1.  Wilson Lynn Maddux was born 22 May 1914, in Bell County, Texas.  He married Addie Jon Lawson on 6 April 1934, in Bell County, Texas.  Addie was born 11 October 1918 in Holland, Texas.  She was 15 when they were married, Wilson was 19.  They had six children together, all boys.  Wilson died in Bell County, Texas, and was buried in the Val Verde Cemetery in Bell County.  Addie Lawson died and was buried in February 1984 in Bell County, Texas.

1.  Lynn Myrell Maddux was born 6 February 1935, in Bell County, Texas. 

2.  Thomas Gene Maddux was born 2 October 1936, in Bell County, Texas.

3.  Joe Lee Maddux was born 18 March 1939, in Bell County, Texas.  He married Rosie Davis.

3. B. L. Maddux was born 5 January 1922, in Bell County, Texas.  He was 2 years old when his mother, Gertrude Richard Maddux, died.  Presumably, B. L. Maddux was named after his father, Bright Lonzo Maddux.  He married Lessie Marie Revoile (possibly Reveile, as spelled in his obituary) on 24 October 1947.  They were married just short of 48 years.  Lessie Revoile was born 11 May 1932, and died 3 October 1995.  B. L. Maddux died 8 July 2002, at his home in Holland, Texas, and was buried July 10 at Holland Cemetery.  His obituary is in the Public Records section of this web site.

4. Gus Ira Maddux was born 4 March 1882, in Alabama.  He died 19 December 1982, in Alabama.  He was 100 years old.

5.  Rosa Ella Maddux was born 6 February 1884, in Alabama. She married James Milton Brown on 16 October 1904, in Holland, Bell County, Texas.  He was born 3 July 1882, in Coryell County, Texas, and died 12 June 1957, in Killeen, Coryell County, Texas, at age 74.  Rosa and James Brown has six children together.  Rosa died 12 July 1968, in Temple, Bell County, Texas, and was buried in Killeen Cemetery in Killeen, Coryell County, Texas.

1.  Velma Mae Brown was born 22 August 1905, in Coryell County, Texas.  She married a Mr. Isgitt.  Velma died 27 March 1976, and was buried in Killeen Cemetery in Killeen, Coryell County, Texas.

2.  Grady Jerant Brown was born 3 July 1904, in Coryell County, Texas.

3.  Altha Alice Brown was born 29 July 1909, in Coryell County, Texas.  She married Robert Poston Adams on 19 August 1928.  He was born about 1909 and died 29 August 1975, at the age of 66. Altha died 15 April 1997.

4.  Willie D. Brown was born 26 October 1911, in Coryell County, Texas.  He died 14 November 1971, and was buried in Killeen Cemetery in Killeen, Coryell County, Texas. 

5.  Florence Rosa Ella Brown was born 12 May 1914, and died 6 August 1933, at age 19.  She was buried in Killeen Cemetery in Killeen, Coryell County, Texas.

6.  Geneva Ruth Brown was born 8 December 1919, in Coryell County, Texas.  She married Richard R. Gentry.

6.  Cluster Right Maddux was born 26 October 1886, in Cleburne County, Alabama.  He married Amanda Jane Richard on 4 December 1904, in Bell County, Texas.  He was 18, she was 16.  Mandy Richard, was born 25 September 1888, in Bell County, Texas. She was a sister to Gertrude Bell Richard, who married Cluster's brother Bright Maddux. Gertie was born in 1895 in Lampasas County, Texas; Mandy was born 7 years later, in Bell County, Texas. Amanda Richard Maddux died 18 February 1962, in Belton, Bell County, Texas.  She was buried in the Holland Cemetery in Holland, Bell County, Texas. Cluster R. Maddux died 17 April 1979, in Port Lavaca, Calhoun County, Texas.  He was buried in the Holland Cemetery, in Holland, Texas.

1.  Oddis Furman Maddux was born 20 September 1906, in Holland, Texas.  He married first Allie B. Lynch on 19 November 1928, in Bell County, Texas, when he was 22.  She was born about 1906 in Jacksonville, Texas.  Oddis Maddux married 2nd Vera Geraldean (sic) Hopkins on 19 January 1955, in Houston, Harris County, Texas.

2.  Audry Glen Maddux was born 1 November 1930, in Holland, Texas.  He married Mary Ann Jochetz on 15 July 1950.  Mary Ann was born 28 September 1932, in Holland, Texas.

1.  Thomas Shane Maddux was born 28 October 1969, in Houston, Texas.  He died 23 August 1983, in Houston, Harris County, Texas, at age 13.  He was buried in Houston, Texas.

2.  Crystal Elane (sic) Maddux was born 27 June 1972, in Houston, Texas.

3.  Amanda Carroll Maddux was born and died on 29 August 1974, in Houston, Texas.

3.  Carol Margaret Maddux was born 29 April 1945, in Houston, Texas.  She married John Wayne Knostman on 16 June 1963, in Houston, Harris County, Texas.

1.  John Wesley Knostman was born 30 April 1966, in Houston, Texas.

2.  Michael David Knostman was born 8 September 1970, in Houston, Texas.

4.  David Allen Maddux was born about 1948, in Houston, Texas.  He died at about age 20 in Hue, Vietnam, and was buried in Lauradale Cemetery in Houston, Harris County, Texas.

5.  Edith Marion Maddux was born 17 June 1914, in Bell County, Texas.  She married Samuel B. Lawless in Houston, Harris County, Texas.

6.  Gladys Vera Maddux was born 8 January 1916, in Holland, Texas.  She married Reifel Charles Joseph Farrell in November 1934, in Houston, Harris County, Texas.  He was born 16 February 1916, in Houston, Harris County, Texas, the son of Samuel Bernard Farrell (born 1886, died 11 August 1969 in Silsbe, Hardin County, Texas) and Helen Reifel.  Reifel, namesake of his mother, died 1 December 1986, in Houston, Texas, 9 months after the death of his daughter Cindy Farrell. Gladys Vera Maddux died 29 January 1999, in Louisville, Denton County, Texas, at age 83.   Gladys Maddux and Reifel Farrell had six children together.¹⁵⁶

1.  Kathleen Frances Farrell was born 3 July 1943, in Barksdale Field Air Force Base, Shreveport, Louisiana.  Kathy Farrell married Richard Sirey; they reside in Pearland, Texas. 

2.  Barbara Jean Farrell was born 9 September 1944, in Barksdale Field Air Force Base, Shreveport, Louisiana.  She married 1st James Robson in May 1966.  They had two children.  They divorced around 1987, and Barbara married Joe Clark in April 1996.  They reside in Schertz, Texas.

1.  Tamatha Ann Robson was born 7 January 1969, in Houston, Texas.  She married Joseph Laycock in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1996.  They divorced in 2003.  Tam resides in the Dallas area.

1.  Tanner Joseph Laycock was born 23 June 1998, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

2.  Caden James Laycock was born 14 June 2002, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

2.  James Christopher Robson was born 1 November 1974, in Corpus Christi, Texas.  He goes by Mo Robson and has a band that plays all around Texas and Oklahoma.  He resides in the Denton, Texas area.

3.  Gay Ellen Farrell was born 25 March 1947, in Galveston, Texas.  She died 14 May 1963, at age 16 of chronic asthma at the National Jewish Hospital for Asthmatics and Lung Diseases in Denver, Colorado. 

4.  Pamela Ann Farrell was born 7 January 1955, in Galveston, Texas.  She married 1st Van Tamplin on 19 June 1974; divorced September 1977.  She married 2nd Abram H. Hall on 14 February 1980; divorced May 1987.  Pam married 3rd Clay Brandenburg on 26 May 1989.

1.  Jacob Ryan Brandenburg was born 27 August 1980, in Houston, Texas.  He married Erin Kennison 9 July 2003. They reside in the Katy, Texas area.

2.  Rebecca Ann Brandenburg was born 4 March 1982 in Hempstead, Texas.  She married Cyrus Dumas 14 Mary 2005.  They reside in Magnolia, Texas.

5.  Cynthia Marie Farrell was born 29 January 1957, in Galveston, Texas.  She married Troy Jackson in 1974; they divorced in 1975.  Cindy married 2nd Glenn King in 1980.  They divorced in 1986.  Cindy died 25 March 1986.

11. Nellie Alice Maddux was born 22 June 1925, in Holland, Texas.  She married W. E. Tennison on 22 November 1942, in Belton, Bell County, Texas.

2.  Sandra Kay Tennison was born 5 June 1944.  She married 1st [1st name unknown] La Joie.  They had two children together. She married 2nd [1st name unknown] Stone.

3. William Lee Tennison was born 31 March 1953, in Waco, Texas.  He married Peggy (Livingston) on 18 April 1986, in Port Lavaca, Calhoun County, Texas.  He had a child by another woman, name unknown, and I do not know if they married.

12.  Clifford Clayton Maddux was born 1 November 1928, in Bell County, Texas.  He died at about 18 months of age, on 9 April 1930.  He was buried in the Dallas Cemetery in Bell County, Texas.

7. Avy Alice Maddux was born 1 March 1889, in Alabama.  In family records, she is also known as Avie and Ava.  She married George Thomas Hogan on 4 June 1905, in Holland, Bell County, Texas.  Tom, as he apparently was called, was born 17 February 1886, in Texas.  His social security number, issued in Texas, was 460-14-6865.  He had a brother, Jack Hogan, some say, who was murdered by a policeman who lost a lot of money gambling with him, and tied his body to a railroad track to make it look like an accident. It is also said that this Jack Hogan was Tom and Avy Maddux Hogan's son (not Tom's brother), also known as Carroll Hogan. The policeman, it is said, later killed himself because of his guilt. If anyone can shed light on whether "Jack" Hogan was Tom's son or brother, please get in touch. 

Tom Hogan  died 7 November 1962, in Bell County, Texas, probably of cancer.  He was buried in Holland Cemetery in Bell County, Texas. Avy died 4 January 1971, in Holland, Texas, and was also buried in Holland Cemetery.  Tom and Avy had seven children together. 

1.  Edna Marie Hogan was born 23 January 1906, in Holland, Bell County, Texas.  She married Lloyd L. Wooley 27 March 1927, in Waco, McLennan County, Texas.  Lloyd was born 8 March 1907, in Bosque County, Texas.  Edna died 3 January 1970 in Temple, Bell County, Texas, at age 63.  Lloyd Wooley died 16 January 1972, in Belton, Bell County, Texas, at age 64.  They are both buried in Holland Cemetery, Holland, Bell County, Texas.

1.  Helen Marie Wooley was born 2 June 1930, in Lorena, McLennan County, Texas.  She died 5 October 1992, and was buried in Reeds Lake Cemetery in Little River, Bell County, Texas. 

2.  Ruth LaVerne Wooley was born 25 November 1932, in Holland, Texas.  She married Sylvian Paul Jenkins on 10 February 1950, in Bell County, Texas.  He was born 4 June 1922, in Louisiana, and died 9 December 1996, in La Marque, Galveston County, Texas.

1.  Samuel Lloyd Jenkins was born 30 March 1951.  He married Deborah Honea.

2.  Barbara Anne Jenkins was born 6 March 1956, in Pasadena, Texas.  She married David Wayne Gilliam.

4.  Paula Lorraine Jenkins was born 12 September 1962.  She married Grady Clardy.

3.  Ruby Mae Wooley was born 28 April 1935, in Bell County, Texas, and died 12 September 1936, in Holland, Texas.  She was one year old.

4.  Thomas Lloyd Wooley was stillborn and died on 3 December 1937, in Holland, Texas.

5.  Lester Gordon Wooley was born abt. 1940.  He died in Bell County, Texas.

6.  Joyce Fay Wooley was born 6 July 1942, in Holland, Texas.

2.  Carroll Genedea "Jack" Hogan was born 9 March 1908 and died 15 March 1931.  This may be the Jack Hogan who, some say, was murdered by a policeman who lost a lot of money gambling with him, and tied his body to a railroad track to make it look like an accident.  This Jack Hogan person has also been said to be Avy Maddux's husband Tom Hogan's brother.  The policeman, it is said, later killed himself because of his guilt. 3.  Cornelia Horace Hogan was born 12 December 1909 in Prairie Dell, Texas.  He married Catherine White on 14 August 1933, in Belton, Bell County, Texas.

4.  Alice Jewel Frances Hogan was born 20 September 1912, probably in Texas.  She married 1st Willie Young.  She married 2nd Bob Philpot.

1.  Dorothy Philpot was born est. 1935.

5.  Willie Naomia (sic) Hogan was born 15 December 1914.  She was sometimes known as Billye.  She married Darrell Russell Danielson on 3 August 1931.  She also married Jim Bolin.  They had two children together.

6.  Opal Mae Hogan was born 12 August 1923.  She died of diphtheria (cat scratch fever) on 17 March 1928 at age 4, and was buried in Lorena Cemetery beside Carroll (spelled "Carrell" on his headstone) G. Hogan.  On her headstone, her name is spelled "Opel." 

7.  Gladys E. Hogan was born 14 September 1925, probably in Texas.  She married 1st Russell Adoulpe Cooper on 20 March 1945, in Killeen, Bell County, Texas.  They had one child together.  He died 19 September 1950 overseas.  Gladys Hogan married 2nd Thomas William Hawkins on 25 December 1953, in Temple, Texas.  He was born 13 June 1932, in Marietta, Ohio.  They divorced.  Thomas William Hawkins died 11 October 1998, in Dellroy, Carroll County, Ohio.  He had terminal cancer.

2.  Arthur Lynn Maddux was born 7 April 1928, in Holland, Texas.  He married Carol Ruth Faidley on 4 October 1951, in Temple, Bell County, Texas.  She was born 13 February 1933, in Raymondville, Texas.  Arthur Maddux died 6 February 1989, and was buried at Bellwood Memorial Park in Temple, Bell County, Texas; he was 60.  After his death, Carol married Dale William Yates of Celina, Texas.  He was born 15 January 1917, the son of Jewel and George Yates.  He was first married to Anna Jean Gould on 2 October 1942.  She died in 1989.  Dale William Yates was a banker, a member of many civic organizations in Temple, Texas, and a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Temple.  He died 24 January 2008, in Temple, Bell County, Texas, and was buried in Hillcrest Cemetery in Temple.  His obituary is in the Public Records - Obituaries section of this website.²⁰⁶

9.  Noah Maddux was born 2 August 1896, in Bell County, Texas.  He was the last child of Henry and Francis Maddux, and the only one born in Texas.  He died in Bell County, Texas, 9 March 1899, at age 3 of a fever, asking for "ga-ga" (water) because the doctor forbade him to have any.  He was buried in Dallas Cemetery in Bell County.
